Add juices to your diet …

I’m writing this at the end of February looking out at the horizontal white haze of a snow blizzard, my daughter, who was getting cabin fever, went out to meet a friend for a walk / sledge as it had temporarily calmed down to just a gentle snow flurry … I’m now expecting the abominable snowman to return soon!

So, with all this wintery weather we sometimes need to give our bodies a boost. Here are two fantastic immune-boosting juices which do just that …

 

Tumeric and Ginger Juice
  • 4 inches of tumeric
  • 4 inches of fresh ginger
  • 2 oranges
  • 4 garlic cloves

Pop all the above ingredients through a juicer and serve chilled.  If you find one ingredient over powering, juice them individually and combine afterwards to suit your individual tastebuds – some of you will prefer less garlic…more orange…

Beetroot and apple juice
  • 6 – 8 carrots
  • 2 beetroot
  • 6 apples
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 inches of fresh ginger

Again, pop all the above in a juicer and serve chilled. Play around with the amounts of ingredients to suit your tastebuds.

I guarantee these will put a skip in your step first thing in the morning and help you body to fight unwelcome bugs away!

Interesting facts about beetroot…

Drinking beetroot juice after exercise reduces muscle soreness and helps your muscles recover, according to new research from Northumbria University, published in this month’s European Journal of Applied Physiology (EJAP). The authors suggested that the nitrates and betalains in beetroot juice, which have been shown to act as antioxidants, might have aided exercise recovery by preserving muscle function and reducing inflammation.

The high content of nitrates in beetroot may also help fight the progression of dementia.

A recent study by Wake Forest University in North Carolina, USA has shown that the high content of nitrates in beetroot may also help fight the progression of dementia, as nitric oxide in the blood (produced by the nitrates in beetroot) also helps increase blood flow to the brain. Beetroot’s folic acid may also play a part as studies suggest it can help protect against Alzheimer’s and dementia.
